Dear scheduling researcher, We are delighted to announce the talk given by Frits Spieksma (TU Eindhoven). The title is "Scheduling in the World of Sports". The seminar will take place on Zoom on Wednesday, October 7, at 13:00 UTC. Join Zoom Meeting https://cesnet.zoom.us/j/92480520441?pwd=jjZUiDxNEVvMe1kB9PzAoTQ4YZSvZn.1 Meeting ID: 924 8052 0441 Passcode: 795229 You can follow the seminar online or offline on our YouTube channel as well: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUoCNnaAfw5NAntItILFn4A The abstract follows. At first sight, the schedule of any particular league or tournament may look like a rather mundane matter. Indeed, it is obvious that one has to pick certain dates and times for a set of matches to be played. However, that is *not* all there is to it. There is a, sometimes subtle, relation between the schedule of a tournament and its outcome. Thus, the schedule of a tournament should be designed with care, ensuring that, among the interests of all other stakeholders, fairness among players (or teams), receives the attention it deserves. We will review examples that shed light on the relation between the schedule on the one hand, and the outcome on the other hand. From these examples, we extract analytical insights that allow us to construct fairer schedules. We intend to illustrate our findings by considering examples from leagues and tournaments from various sports. The next talk in our series will be Shunji Tanaka (Okayama University) | October 21 | Optimizing item stacking and retrieval.
