Shmoys were invited by Michael Pinedo (New York University) to give the talk, whose abstract follows. During the 1970’s, the area of scheduling developed from a hodge-podge of isolated results into a unified theory. Over the past decades, it has grown to a mature and lively area, which is a meeting point of operations research, mathematics and computer science, and at the same time a sound basis for the allocation of scarce resources to activities over time in many practical situations. We will sketch the early development of scheduling theory, and also discuss the integration of ideas from online analysis, stochastic models, and machine learning in response to the needs of a changing society. The second seminar in our series will be given by Mor Harchol-Balter (CMU) in "Recent Breakthroughs in Stochastic Scheduling Analysis" and it will be on April 14 at 13:00 UTC. The basic idea is to have biweekly talks by researchers from anywhere in the world. We believe that it is a perfect moment to explore this opportunity, which may help attract young people to this field. A Program Committee (PC) will keep the quality of the talks that will remain immortal when recorded and available on Youtube. (It may be time to modernize our community ) The seminar series' overall organization will be undertaken by three PC co-chairs. The three people who, up to now, have initiated this venture are Zdenek Hanzalek (Prague), Michael Pinedo (New York), and Guohua Wan (Shanghai).
